EXO's Kai and Sehun Confirmed to Debut as New Unit in December

EXO is about to get a new subunit — and it's the pairing fans have been asking for since the two were rookies.

On November 2, Newsen reported that Kai and Sehun would make their official unit debut in December. SM Entertainment confirmed the news the same day: "Kai and Sehun will release their first mini album this December as a new unit of EXO. We ask for your continued interest and anticipation."

That's the first concrete detail about the project — and, true to SM's usual style, almost the only one. No unit name, no release date, no title track. Just a month and a pairing.

The "94z" finally get their own stage

Kai and Sehun were both born in 1994, and they've been linked by more than a birthday for most of EXO's career. The two have built a quiet, sibling-like dynamic that fans have followed across group content, live stages, and variety appearances.

That chemistry has been getting more screen time lately. Last year, Sehun made a surprise guest appearance at Kai's solo concert, joining him on stage. In January, the pair reunited for a special episode of "Jeongwating," the spin-off of Kai's web variety show "Jeongwaja," during its winter break. They are also set to appear together as travel partners on ENA's "World Dice Tour 4," alongside actor Chun Woo-hee.

A subunit is the natural next step. Idols often describe a duo project as a chance to show a side of themselves that a full group release doesn't leave room for, and Kai and Sehun are a useful pairing on paper: one is among the group's most distinctive dancers and a seasoned soloist, the other a rapper and performer who has already proven he can carry a project as half of a duo.

A different milestone for each member

For Kai, this is a first. Despite a solo career that includes four EPs and a reputation as one of K-pop's most expressive dancers, he has never been part of a formal subunit. For Sehun, it's familiar territory — he and Chanyeol debuted as EXO-SC in 2019 and released two albums, What a Life and 1 Billion Views. He also put out his first Chinese-language single in July, a sign he has been deliberately widening his own lane.

EXO have a strong track record with subunits. EXO-CBX — Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin — debuted in 2016 with "Hey Mama!" and became one of the most successful offshoots in the group's history. A Kai and Sehun unit is a different proposition: less vocal-focused, more performance-driven, which is exactly where both members are strongest.

Why December, why now

The timing makes sense. EXO have had a busy 2026: their eighth studio album, "Reverxe," arrived in January, sold more than a million copies, and swept charts and music shows. From April to July they toured 14 regions across Asia with 27 shows. Before the unit arrives, they'll play three encore concerts in Seoul on November 6-8.

That schedule creates a clean runway. The encores keep EXO in front of fans through early November, and a December release gives the unit its own window after the group's tour wraps — close enough to the anniversary year to feel like part of the same story, far enough from the encores not to compete with them.

It also gives SM time to build a proper rollout. December is crowded with year-end shows and holiday releases, but a first mini album from a new unit is the kind of project that can stand out with the right teaser strategy.

What's still unknown

Everything that matters, basically. SM has not announced the unit's name, the exact release date, the title track, or how many songs will be on the mini album. It also hasn't said whether the pair will promote on music shows or how the project will be positioned against EXO's group activities.

That silence is normal at this stage. What it does confirm is that the project is real and close — a December release means teasers should begin within weeks, likely right after the Seoul encores. For a fandom that has spent years watching Kai and Sehun grow up together, that's more than enough to start the countdown.

EXO's "94z" have been the group's most natural pairing for a long time. Now they finally get a project that belongs to just the two of them.
